Romantic choral music grants Heilbronn an evening of peace
When the voices of the Heilbronn vocal ensemble alto e basso rise in the Nikolaikirche on December 17, 2026, the historic church space transforms into a festive soundscape. The traditional Christmas concert Peace on Earth takes the audience through the intimate, colorful choral music of German Romanticism and connects it with the sensitive Christmas motets by Francis Poulenc.
A musical Advent between warmth and expansiveness
The program focuses on significant composers from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Carl Loewe, August Becker, Heinrich von Herzogenberg, Peter Cornelius, and Max Reger unfold their emotional depth in the Nikolaikirche. Between profound harmonies, radiant soundscapes, and finely nuanced dynamics, an intense live atmosphere emerges that musically enriches the Advent season.
Romantic sound language meets French elegance
Interwoven into the concert are four Christmas motets by the French composer Francis Poulenc. His concise tonal language sets striking contrasts to the romantic orchestration of German choral literature. The interplay of heartfelt devotion, clear lineation, and modern timbre promises a varied concert experience filled with musical movement.
alto e basso makes the church space shine
The Heilbronn vocal ensemble alto e basso shapes the evening under the direction of Michael Böttcher. The acoustics of the Protestant Nikolaikirche give the voices space and resonance, while the precise synchronization of the choral voices makes the architecture of the historic house of worship musically perceptible. From soft pianissimo to powerful choral sound, the expressive range of the stage performance is extensive.
Free admission: Music for the whole city
Admission to the concert is free. This allows this festive choral experience to reach a wide audience and invites everyone to experience the pre-Christmas season together, focused, and without commercial barriers. On December 16, 2026, the program can also be heard at the Protestant city church in Neckarsulm; on December 17, alto e basso will perform in Heilbronn.
Conclusion: Visitors can expect an atmospheric concert evening between German Romanticism and French Christmas motet. Those who wish to enrich the Advent season with festive choral sound, historical church acoustics, and moving music will experience a special moment of tranquility and community at Peace on Earth.
