Anselm Kiefer: Monumental Image Worlds Between Mythology and History
On Saturday, December 5, 2026, the Volkshochschule Heilbronn will focus on the work of Anselm Kiefer and his exhibition at the Kunsthalle Würth. The 90-minute cultural program introduces the visual language of one of the most significant contemporary artists and opens pathways to painting, installation, and art historical contextualization.
Materials as Carriers of Memory
Anselm Kiefer's large-format, expressive images unfold their impact not solely through color and composition. Oil and acrylic combine in his so-called history landscapes with straw, sand, and paper. The relief-like surfaces make time, destruction, and memory physically tangible. In the analysis of his work, aesthetic experience meets art historical analysis.
Mythology, History, and Politics
Kiefer's artistic direction revolves around the deep layers of European cultural history. Mythological narratives, political traumas, and historical landscapes appear in his images as open spaces for thought and memory. Monumental formats and materially saturated structures create an intense exhibition atmosphere where color, light, and surface become independent carriers of meaning.
An Artist of Post-War German Art
The German painter born in 1945 lives and works in Croissy-Beaubourg near Paris. His international significance was recognized in 2023 with the awarding of the German National Prize. Also in 2023, Wim Wenders released the film Anselm about the artist in cinemas. In 2025, the Museum Haus Kiefer opened in Kiefer's childhood home in Rastatt-Ottersdorf.
Cultural Education at the Volkshochschule
The event combines focused image observation with cultural education. It imparts art historical knowledge and sensitizes attendees to Kiefer's handling of materials, symbolism, and memory. For art enthusiasts, an art experience is created that sustainably broadens the view of contemporary painting and installation.
