Scrolling, liking, hating? An evening about antisemitism in digital space
Social media shapes how young people absorb information, form opinions, and experience societal debates. At the same time, antisemitic content spreads on TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube in seemingly harmless memes, short videos, and conspiracy myths. The lecture at the Volkshochschule Heilbronn examines this digital dynamic and asks how radicalization works online.
When hate appears in the feed
Algorithms amplify content that generates attention. Holocaust denial, open Jew-hatred, and antisemitic narratives thus reach a large audience and often appear embedded in entertainment, trends, or supposed informational offerings. The evening creates space for classification, analysis, and discussion.
Expert knowledge on digital radicalization
Leo Fischer will speak as the lecturer. The author, columnist, and satirist studied literary studies, philosophy, and journalism in Berlin and Lausanne and was the editor-in-chief of the satire magazine Titanic from 2008 to 2013. He currently works at the Anne Frank Educational Institution and is co-author of several reports on digital radicalization.
Fischer has published, among others, the books The TikTok Universe of the (Extreme) Right and The Holocaust as a Meme – How History is Reinterpreted in Digital Spaces. He is also co-editor of the volume Code & Prejudice: On Artificial Intelligence, Racism, and Antisemitism, which has been included in the publication series of the Federal Agency for Civic Education.
Event experience with societal relevance
The event combines political education, media literacy, and current antisemitism research. In the concentrated atmosphere of the Deutschhof, visitors receive impulses to critically assess digital content, recognize manipulation mechanisms, and discuss courses of action against hate online. The Volkshochschule Heilbronn thus makes a statement for democratic debate culture and reflective media use.
Cooperation and event framework
The lecture takes place in cooperation with the Catholic Adult Education. It starts on Thursday, January 28, 2027, at 19:00. The event lasts until 20:30 and will be held in room 401/Atelier of the vhs in the Deutschhof.
Conclusion: Understanding digital mechanisms, showing attitude
The evening offers an informed and tangible engagement with antisemitism on social media. Those who want to understand how digital radicalization works and what possibilities exist in everyday life, education, and civil society will experience an informative lecture in Heilbronn with high societal relevance.
