Tiger Mosquito in Heilbronn: How well is the region prepared for tropical diseases?
The Asian tiger mosquito has arrived in the Heilbronn region. The panel discussion at the Heilbronn Adult Education Center on October 28, 2026, will address the health risks, community prevention, and the question of how the population and healthcare system manage potential tropical diseases.
Between mosquito bites and health care
The day-active Asian tiger mosquito can transmit pathogens such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses. It was first detected in the Heilbronn district in 2021. So far, no infections transmitted by this mosquito species have been observed in Germany. The event will provide a factual assessment of the situation and highlight which developments will be relevant in the coming years.
Concrete questions for municipalities and citizens
Even small collections of water in flowerpot saucers, buckets, rain barrels, or clogged gutters can serve as breeding grounds for the tiger mosquito. Therefore, practical measures for early detection and containment, as well as understandable information for the population, will be the focus. The discussion will connect scientific expertise with municipal experience and self-care in everyday life.
Panel with medical and political expertise
On the panel will be Dr. med. PhD Elham Khatamzas, senior physician for clinical infectious diseases in the Department of Infectious and Tropical Medicine at Heidelberg University Hospital, Dr. med. Michael Scheerle, head of the Heilbronn City Health Department, and Jochen Haußmann, former health policy spokesperson for the FDP/DVP parliamentary group. Silke Vornam will moderate the event.
The event offers well-founded information, an open public discussion, and guidance on handling a topic that is becoming increasingly important due to climate change and the spread of new vectors. The evening is organized by the Heilbronn Adult Education Center in cooperation with the Reinhold Maier Foundation.
