Elaste: An Evening Between New Wave, Pop Culture, and Contemporary History

The Theaterschiff Heilbronn will transform on October 17, 2026, into a resonance space for that exciting time when music, fashion, art, and attitude merged inseparably. Michael Reinboth and Thomas Elsner share the story of the legendary magazine Elaste from first-hand experience and bring a piece of New Wave culture back to the stage through readings, talks, images, and a DJ set.

A Magazine as a Time Capsule of Pop Culture

Elaste was founded in 1980 in Hanover and became one of the most influential German zeitgeist magazines of the New Wave era. The uncompromising graphic design, the focus on international scenes, and the connection of music, art, fashion, and nightlife made the magazine a cultural statement. Multiple awards for graphics and design established Elaste as a seismograph for a generation that understood style not as a superficiality but as an attitude.

Stories, Images, and Voices of a Tumultuous Era

The evening's focus is on the band Elaste from 1980 to 1986. Exclusive photographs, interviews, and texts take us deep into an era whose energy still resonates today. Contributions from Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Diedrich Diederichsen, Jon Savage, Thomas Meinecke, and Ellen von Unwerth meet portraits and conversations about Andy Warhol, Kraftwerk, DAF, and Duran Duran.

The dramaturgy of the evening follows the principle of a mixtape: different voices, images, and memories weave together into a vibrant panorama. Reinboth and Elsner recount how the magazine came to be, how scenes shift, and when an aesthetic decision becomes a social commitment. Florian Weller will host the evening.

When the Sound Continues to Tell

After the reading and talk, the stage will open for a DJ set by Michael Reinboth and Thomas Elsner. New Wave, Electro, Cold Wave, Proto Disco, Industrial, and defining sounds of the 1980s will transform the theatrical atmosphere into a nocturnal club vibe. Lighting, acoustics, and the unique architecture of the Theaterschiff create the perfect setting for a stage experience between memory, discourse, and musical ecstasy.

Pop History to Listen and Experience

Elaste is aimed at everyone who seeks not just to consume pop culture but to understand its emergence. The event combines cultural journalistic contextualization with personal memory and immediate audience reaction. From a book about a magazine, a night about media, scenes, style, and the power of independent cultural spaces emerges.

Conclusion: A Journey Through Time with Resonance

At the Theaterschiff Heilbronn, the audience can expect an unusual combination of reading, conversation, visual storytelling, and DJ set. Elaste makes the New Wave era a tangible stage experience and demonstrates how closely music, design, and social attitudes are intertwined. Anyone wishing to experience pop history live and enjoy an evening full of stories, images, and defining sounds should secure this date.
